THESIS STATEMENT

Although character performance often drives and defines a traditional animated narrative, animators can adapt the framework relied upon for environmental design of  modern video games in order to inject their story with narrative subtext and increase the depth and engagement in storytelling without inflating or extending the overall narrative.

Niyati is a visual exploration that challenges conventional narrative methods by using environmental design as the primary storyteller. Instead of relying on characters and dialogue, the film unfolds within a flooded, abandoned museum, where each room reflects a distinct phase in the rise and fall of a civilization. This thesis is driven by the idea that powerful, immersive storytelling can emerge solely from the interplay of visual elements—artifacts, architecture, and natural lighting—thereby bridging the gap between traditional animation and modern video game design. By examining how the environment can carry narrative subtext, Niyati not only redefines storytelling but also offers a fresh perspective on the inevitable consequences of human actions, making a bold statement about destiny and self-destruction
